Thursday, June 05, 2014 - Physicians Honored with Preceptor Award

Two area physicians received recognition during the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine (WVSOM) Graduation Awards Ceremony that took place May 29.

Robert Snuffer, D.O., received the Outstanding Family Medicine Preceptor Award for the Central Region of its Statewide Campus system. Dr. Snuffer is a graduate of WVSOM and completed his residency in family medicine at United Hospital Center in Bridgeport, W.Va. He practices at Weston Family Medical Care and Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital in Weston, W.Va. He is a clinical assistant professor of family medicine for WVSOM.

Tuan Nguyen, M.D., received the Outstanding Specialty Preceptor Award for the Central Region. Dr. Nguyen is a graduate of the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in Memphis. He completed his general surgery residency at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine and the Physicians Medical Center in Birmingham, Ala. He practices general surgery at Memorial Health System in Marietta, Ohio. He serves WVSOM as a clinical assistant professor of surgery.

Preceptors assist and provide guidance to WVSOM medical students in their third- and fourth-year clinical rotations. During the annual Graduation Awards Ceremony, recognition was awarded to preceptors from each of the six statewide campus regions who have demonstrated excellence in teaching and mentoring. These health professionals have also demonstrated a commitment to community wellness and service.

WVSOM President Michael Adelman, D.O., D.P.M., J.D., said physicians willing to offer guidance as preceptors provide an invaluable service to students.

“On top of their responsibilities as physicians, these individuals take on the mentorship and evaluation of students performing clinical rotations at hospitals around the state,” Adelman said. “It is impossible to adequately convey the profound impact a good preceptor has on shaping the competencies and character of these future physicians. This award is one small way we can honor their efforts and recognize the positive difference they’re making in our students’ lives.”

Approximately 50 hospitals, clinics and medical centers across West Virginia participate in WVSOM’s Statewide Campus program. Outstanding Primary Care and Specialty Preceptor Awards were given to physicians in each campus region including central, eastern, northern, south central, southeast and southwest.
