April is Esophageal Cancer Awareness Month and we believe that information is power in the battle against cancer. We’re teaming up with Dr. Roman Petrov, surgeon at Memorial Health System, to arm you with the facts you need to know to stay healthy.

Fast Facts about Esophageal Cancer

- Esophageal cancer can occur anywhere in the lining of the esophagus
- In 2014 there were 18,170 new cases of Esophageal Cancer diagnosed
- Symptoms of esophageal cancer usually do not appear until the disease is advanced
- Esophageal Cancer is usually diagnosed at a late stage. That’s why it’s important to know the risk factors and to schedule an upper endoscopy.

If you are experiencing:
   - Difficulty or pain while swallowing
   - Chest pain and burning
   - Frequently choking on food
   - Weight loss
   - Hoarseness
   - Hiccups
   - Pneumonia
   - High calcium levels

Who is at risk?
   - Men are diagnosed almost four times more than women are.
   - Tobacco and alcohol use are big culprits of many esophageal cancers. The combination of smoking and drinking increases your risk.
   - People older than 65 are at greatest risk.
   - Less than 15% are younger than 55.
   - Eat your fruits and veggies to decrease the risk for esophageal cancer.
   - People with long-standing acid reflux, heartburn or Barrett’s Esophagus are at a sharply increased risk
