(Marietta, Ohio, October 1, 2009) - “Teddy Bear Week,” seven days of special fundraising to replenish the Teddy Bear Fund, takes place Oct. 4 through Oct. 10, 2009. The Fund, coordinated by the Marietta Memorial Hospital volunteers, provides a stuffed animal to every child, aged 6 months to 12 years old, when they are admitted to either Marietta Memorial or Selby General Hospitals.
According to Anna Vukovic, Marietta Area Teddy Bear Coordinator, more than 1,200 stuffed animals are handed out each year. “Stuffed animals are used by doctors and nurses as a tool to help demonstrate unfamiliar hospital procedures to children. Casts, IVs and bandages are a common sight on the newly acquired ‘friends’ in the arms of our young patients on their way to surgery, lab and x-ray,” commented Vukovic.
“Teddy Bear Week” will feature special promotions at local fast-food restaurants. A percentage of selected food items purchased will assist the fund at the following sites:
Oct. 5 (Monday) Bar-B-Cutie, percent of evening receipts
Oct. 6 (Tuesday) All Marietta McDonald’s: 25¢ donated on each med. fry
Oct. 7 (Wednesday) Cici’s Pizza, 10 percent of evening sales until 9 p.m.
Oct. 9 (Friday) Captain D’s 1/2 of proceeds on every cheesestick sold
* Wendy’s restaurants: Collection Jar – will match week’s proceeds
Plastic “Teddy Bear Jugs” will also be available in area businesses for spare change donations. The administrative costs will be absorbed by Marietta Memorial Hospital. If you are interested in making a personal donation, checks can be made out and sent to: The Marietta Area Teddy Bear Fund, P.O. Box 225, Marietta, Ohio 45750.
