Memorial Health System’s Signature Care for Bariatrics provides an opportunity for those who are ready to make a change in their lives. Led by bariatric surgeon, Anirban Gupta, MD, FRCSC, FACS, a team of experts work together to help meet your lifestyle and weight loss goals.
Our program is a personalized treatment plan designed to meet the specific needs of each individual. Our team listens to you, supports you and provides a program that involves lifestyle, emotional and dietary counseling, exercise recommendations and a complete support system. Our program also offers a variety of minimally invasive surgical options.
Your journey begins with a consultation with Dr. Gupta and a dietitian. They will help you determine if you are a good candidate for weight loss surgery and which surgery would be best for you. As a team, you may decide that options other than bariatric surgery, like a medically supervised diet and exercise program, are better suited for your weight loss needs.
The bariatrics program offers three minimally invasive bariatric surgical options for people who are ready to empower themselves; laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, laparoscopic gastric banding and laparoscopic gastric bypass.
Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy
This procedure limits the amount of food you can eat by creating a thin, vertical sleeve of stomach, and removing the remaining part so that you feel fuller sooner.
Laparoscopic Gastric Banding
This procedure uses an adjustable band to reduce the stomach’s capacity and restrict the amount of food you consume. It is reversible and helps to make you feel fuller faster and longer.
Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass
This procedure involves taking a small portion of the stomach, stapling it together, and forming a small pouch roughly the size of an egg to limit food intake. It also bypasses part of the intestines to reduce calorie absorption.
Is Surgery Right for You?
Weight loss surgery isn't for everyone. You must have a body mass index (BMI) over 40 or a BMI of 35 with other obesity related illnesses.
Patients who choose surgery must make major diet and lifestyle changes. And, like any major surgery, there are potential risks and side effects to consider. Our Bariatric Program Coordinator Vickie Johnson, along with our entire team, is here to guide you through the process and help coordinate your care.
