Marietta Memorial Hospital’s Blood Bank Celebrates Night of Giving
Marietta Memorial Hospital’s Blood Bank will be holding a special Night of Giving on Tuesday, December 20 from 1-8 p.m. in the First Floor Conference Room at MMH. Refreshments and door prizes will be provided.

A complete schedule of Blood Mobile locations can be found on MMH’s website at www.mmhospital.org. A blood level indicator can be found on the homepage to check our current supply.

  • Every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood.
  • More than 38,000 blood donations are needed every day.
  • The average red blood cell transfusion is approximately 3 pints. 
  • The blood type most often requested by hospitals is Type O. 
  • The blood used in an emergency is already on the shelves before the event occurs.
  • More than one million new people are diagnosed with cancer each year. Many of them will need blood, sometimes daily, during their chemotherapy treatment. 
  • A single car accident victim can require as many as 100 pints of blood.

  • 4.5 million Americans will need a blood transfusion each year.
  • 43,000 pints: amount of donated blood used each day in the U.S. and Canada. 
  • Only 37 percent of the U.S. population is eligible to donate blood – less than 10 percent do annually.

  • One pint of blood can save up to three lives. 
  • 94 percent of blood donors are registered voters. 
  • Four main red blood cell types: A, B, AB and O. Each can be positive or negative for the Rh factor. AB is the universal recipient; O negative is the universal donor of red blood cells. 
  • Dr. Karl Landsteiner first identified the major human blood groups – A, B, AB and O – in 1901. 
  • One unit of blood can be separated into several components: red blood cells, plasma, platelets and cryoprecipitate.

Marietta Memorial Hospital operates one of only two hospital based blood banks in Ohio. Eighty to 90 percent of the blood products used at MMH & Selby are drawn locally, which is a tremendous advantage in terms of availability, quality and cost. Drawing blood locally can mean a big difference in patient treatment.

For example, the hospital can obtain blood products needed by patients more quickly than through off-site blood banks. Our 34-foot Blood Donor Mobile unit is equipped with four donor beds, an area where staff can take confidential donor health histories and storage space for post donation snacks and beverages. Are You Ready to Make a Difference?
Here are important things to know:

  • Blood donation is a safe and simple procedure, and gives you the great feeling of having saved up to three lives
  • The whole process takes around an hour, but the actual donation only takes about 8-10 minutes 
  • Drink plenty of water so you’re hydrated before donating. 
  • Have a healthy meal before you donate – and try to avoid fatty foods. 
  • Wear clothing with sleeves that can be raised above the elbow. 
  • If you are taking any medication, bring a list of those with you.
