Marietta Memorial Hospital Recognized Nationally for Promoting Organ, Eye and Tissue Donation

(July 19, 2016, Marietta, Ohio) –
Marietta Memorial Hospital was among a select group of hospitals nationwide recognized for promoting enrollment in state organ donor registries in a national campaign sponsored by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). The campaign has added 400,000 donor enrollments to state registries nationwide since 2011.

Marietta Memorial Hospital conducted awareness and registry campaigns to educate staff, patients, visitors and community members about the critical need for organ, eye and tissue donors and, by doing so, increased the number of potential donors on Ohio’s donor registry. The hospital earned points for each activity implemented between May 2015 and April 2016 and was awarded platinum recognition through the HRSA Workplace Partnership for Life Hospital Campaign.

Of the 995 hospitals and transplant centers participating in the campaign, 281 organizations were awarded platinum recognition during this phase of the campaign. See the full list of recognized hospitals at www.organdonor.gov.

“I’m very excited that our community has become so involved with us in raising awareness for organ, eye and tissue donation,” said Teresa Adams, director of critical care services for Memorial Health System and Lifeline of Ohio hospital liaison. “I greatly appreciate Marietta Middle School’s and Mayor Joe Matthews’ participation in the Torch Run for Life earlier this spring, which greatly helped to increase awareness for the urgent need for donors. As a result of all of our work, we’ve certainly seen an increase in the number of people becoming registered donors in our community.”

Adams continued, “Knowing your loved one’s wishes to become a donor is so important, and as the director of critical care services, I’m pleased to see those conversations starting with families before they’re in a position of decision making during one of the most difficult times in their lives. Marietta Memorial Hospital is proud of the work that is being done in our community in raising awareness for the need for registered donors and we look forward to continuing our work with Lifeline of Ohio in our mission to serve our community.”

This campaign is a special effort of HRSA’s Workplace Partnership for Life to mobilize the nation’s hospitals to increase the number of people in the country who are registered organ, eye and tissue donors and ultimately, the number of organs available for transplant. The campaign unites donation advocates at hospitals with representatives from their local organ procurement organizations, Donate Life America affiliates, and state and regional hospital associations. Working together, the teams leverage their communications resources and outreach efforts to most effectively spread word of the critical need for donors.

Marietta Memorial Hospital worked with Lifeline of Ohio on the campaign. “Lifeline of Ohio is pleased to recognize Marietta Memorial Hospital as a Platinum Award winner in the 2015-2016 Hospital Campaign held by HRSA,” said Kathy Warhola, RN, BSN, Regional representative for Lifeline of Ohio. “Marietta Memorial was recognized for their efforts in increasing awareness of the urgent need for organ, eye and tissue donation.”

Warhola continued, “This past year, the hospital participated in a variety of awareness and registration activities including the Ohio Torch Run for Life, part of the U.S. Transplant Games; Hope for the Holidays event for donor families, and; donor registration drives to  register donors in their community. Lifeline of Ohio looks forward to continuing our collaborative effort with Marietta Memorial to save and heal lives through organ, eye and tissue donation.”
