What to Expect During Your ED Visit
The first thing to expect when arriving at the emergency department is to be evaluated by a registered nurse (RN). The triage process is a quick assessment of your medical condition and determines the order in which patients are seen and treated. During this process, the RN will ask for your name, date of birth, social security number and the main reason for your visit. This is also the time that your vital signs (blood pressure, temperature, etc.) will be checked. Your next steps will be determined based on the seriousness of your condition.
It’s important to be prepared at all times for an emergency. To expedite treatment in the event one occurs, it’s advised that you keep an information card on you at all times with the following information along with your insurance card and photo identification.
1. Name and telephone number of your primary care physician
2. A list of your medications and any drug allergies
3. Advance directives: living wills, do-not-resuscitate orders, power of attorney, etc.
