Ethics
If you need help with a medical decision, first discuss the matter with your physician, clergy or other health care givers. If the decision is particularly challenging for you, Memorial Health System has a Bioethics Committee which is available as a resource to patients, families, physicians and staff. The Bioethics Committee will help evaluate, offer advice and act as an educational forum. The committee is not a decision-making body but is an objective multi-disciplinary committee. You may request a consultation or review by calling the operator at 0. The operator will then refer your call to the appropriate person.

The chairperson of the Bioethics Committee, or a member of the committee will make every attempt to address an issue with you as soon as possible. Discussions with and recommendations made by the Bioethics Committee are kept confidential.

Admission
Your physician will schedule your hospital admission and let you know the time and date to report to patient registration. If you are arriving at the hospital Monday through Friday between the hours of 6 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., please report to the Outpatient Center located on the first floor. If you arrive on Saturday or Sunday or after 5:30 p.m. during the weekdays, please go to the registration desk in the Emergency Department.

In the admissions area, you will be interviewed and asked to provide your name, address, telephone number, type of insurance, photo ID and other pertinent information. We request your photo ID for security reasons. Our hospital uses an electronic scanning device to capture information related to your hospital account. This information includes your photo identification. Scanning your picture helps to ensure that we have selected the correct patient medical record, which contains your medical history. It also protects you from others who may wish to steal your medical identification.

Insurance Responsibility
After the registration process is complete, you will be assigned a room and escorted to it.

Please try to determine if your hospital stay will require pre-certification. If so, call your insurance company to advise them of your planned admission. If you are admitted on an emergency basis, please tell the registration clerk if your insurance company requires pre-certification and we will make every attempt to notify your carrier on your behalf. This is very important and will ensure that your insurance company will pay maximum benefits under the terms of your policy.

Pre-Certification Information
Many scheduled outpatient procedures require pre-certification. If you believe your insurance company requires advance notice about a test or procedure, please contact your insurer (the phone number to call is usually found on the back of your insurance card) or your physician???s office to be certain this vital step has been taken to avoid having your claim denied or your benefits reduced. You should also check with your insurer to confirm that the hospital and your physician are in network as well. What To Bring

For your comfort during your stay you should bring a robe, slippers with non-skid soles, toothbrush, tooth-paste and comb/brush. Clothes to wear when you are discharged can be brought after you are admitted.

Cash & Valuables
It is recommended that you do not keep valuables in your room. No more than $5 should be kept at your bedside for incidentals like a newspaper. If your valuables cannot be taken home, they may be placed in the hospital safe. The hospital will not assume responsibility for valuables not placed in the safe.

Visitors & Guests
Visitors are an important part of patient recovery and we welcome them during visiting hours. Refer to information found under Visiting Hours in the Visitor Information section on page 7 for more information.

??? Visitors should check with nursing staff before bringing gifts of food or beverages.
??? Children under 12 must have adult supervision.
??? Visitors to a patient???s room should be limited to two at a time.
??? Visitors are not permitted to smoke in the hospital.

Telephones
Cell phone use is permitted in the hospital with the exception of areas where patient monitoring equipment is in use or in areas identified by signage. You may use your cell phone in waiting areas and on the walkways over Matthew Street. Monitored use is for the safety of our patients, due to the possibility of them interfering with patient equipment. Please limit the use of cell phones in patient rooms.

Telephones are available in every patient room except ICU. Outgoing calls can be made 24 hours a day. You may receive calls from 7 a.m. until 9 p.m. and in emergencies.

Clergy & Religion
You are invited to use the chapel on the fourth floor walkway at any time for family or private meditation. Please obtain permission from your nurse before you leave your unit. Your clergy is always welcome at Marietta Memorial. The admissions clerk will ask you if you have a religious preference. Simply give the admissions clerk the name of your church. A chaplain???s program is available to minister to the spiritual needs of our patients regardless of faith. A chaplain routinely visits on the floors. Call (740) 374-1469 for the pastoral care coordinator or for the pastor on call, or inform your nurse that you would like to speak to a chaplain.

Each patient room should have a Gideon New Testament in one of the drawers. If there is not one or you would like both the Old and New Testaments, please call the Pastoral Care office at (740) 374-1469. A large print bible and materials for other faiths may also be obtained by calling this number.

Holy Communion is available through the Pastoral Care office. If you would like to receive it during your stay in the hospital, please call the Pastoral Care office at (740) 374-1469 or contact the hospital switchboard by dialing ???0??? and the operator will connect you with Pastoral Care.

Reading Materials
Newspapers can be purchased daily from a vending machine at the entrance of the Emergency Department, on level G of the parking garage (by the elevators) and in the first floor coffee and gift shop (near the Radiology Department).

Donated books, magazines and puzzles are available to all patients and guests.

Mail & Flower Delivery
Mail and flowers are delivered daily to your room by hospital volunteers. Mail received after you are discharged will be forwarded to the address you gave upon admission. Only small flowers and plants are permitted in ICU and PICU.
