Finding Strength After Stroke

After a stroke left him unable to walk, Jeff Barton found strength and renewed independence through our compassionate Therapy Services team.

Fall 2025

When Jeff Barton suffered a stroke two years ago, everything changed. His mobility, confidence, and independence were suddenly stripped away. Simple tasks—like getting out of bed, walking across the room, or tying his shoes—became impossible. He couldn’t move the right side of his body, and the loss of physical control left him feeling frustrated and defeated.

After a 28-day rehabilitation stay at another facility that ended with him still unable to walk, Jeff felt deeply discouraged and uncertain about what his future would look like. The life he had known was suddenly out of reach, and hope felt like it was slipping away.

His turning point came through the support of his sister-in-law, who suggested he try the Department of Therapy Services at Memorial Health System in Marietta, Ohio. That single recommendation marked the beginning of a new chapter—one filled with determination, encouragement, and eventually, deep gratitude.

From his very first visit, Jeff noticed a difference. The team didn’t just treat his condition; they listened and worked with him to develop a personalized plan. Open and clear communication was a highlight that made a big difference for Jeff. He was treated with dignity and compassion—and that changed everything. What began as a simple hope to walk again turned into real, steady progress.

Nearly two years later, Jeff continues therapy and has made significant strides. He is now walking, driving again with the help of a left-foot pedal, and biking regularly as part of his rehabilitation. Jeff often reflects on how thankful he is for the care he has received. Each therapist he’s worked with played a role in his recovery, offering not just expertise, but encouragement and belief in his ability to improve. The kindness and professionalism of the team became a foundation he could lean on during both progress and setbacks.

One of those setbacks came about a year into his recovery, when he began experiencing foot pain. X-rays revealed a fracture, which required surgery. It felt like a step backward, but Jeff stayed committed. With support from his care team and his own perseverance, he resumed therapy and continued his recovery. He is now walking again, using an ankle brace, and remains focused on his goals.

Throughout his experience, one therapist in particular, Rob Moat, stood out. Rob’s consistent communication and guidance helped Jeff stay focused and regain confidence in his recovery journey. Knowing what to expect, why each step mattered, and having someone believe in his potential gave Jeff the strength to keep going. What meant the most to Jeff was that Rob truly listened. He took the time to understand Jeff’s goals and worked alongside him—literally every step of the way—to help him achieve them.

Beyond his gratitude for the care team, Jeff is also deeply thankful for his family. His wife and son were with him every step of the way. His son even took time away from work to help during the most challenging moments. That support was a constant source of motivation, and Jeff credits them with giving him the emotional strength he needed to succeed.

Would he recommend Memorial Health System to others? “Without a doubt,” he says. “Their care, their communication, the way they treat people—it’s above all.”

Today, Jeff and his entire family receive their care through Memorial Health System—a reflection of the trust and confidence he has in their service. The quality of care, clear communication, and deep compassion he experienced made a lasting impression.

For Jeff, recovery has meant more than just walking again—it’s meant reclaiming the parts of his life that once felt out of reach: biking, driving, and looking forward to hunting season. Every step forward has been fueled by deep gratitude—for the people who supported him, the therapists who guided him, and the health system that gave him hope.

Not only is Jeff walking again—which was his initial goal—he now bikes several miles each day, something that once felt impossible. One of the new goals he’s set for himself is to lead one of the races on his bike at Memorial Health System’s annual Fund Run Glow, held each October.

Jeff Barton’s journey is a powerful reminder that healing is not just about physical recovery—it’s also about feeling seen, supported, and valued. From the moment he arrived, Jeff felt like more than just a patient. The therapy team took the time to get to know him, understand his goals, and build a plan tailored to his unique needs and challenges. They celebrated small wins, offered encouragement during setbacks, and never let him lose sight of the progress he was making.

Whether it was patiently explaining exercises, listening to his concerns, or simply treating him with kindness and respect, the team created an environment where Jeff felt motivated, hopeful, and empowered to keep moving forward. Their dedication made all the difference—and Jeff will never forget the role they played in helping him reclaim his life.
