Susan Abdella’s Generous Gift to Memorial Health System
Mayor Susan Abdella’s heartfelt donation brings vital NICU care to Belpre—keeping families together when it matters most.

Susan Abdella, lifelong Belpre resident and current Mayor of Belpre, knows firsthand the struggles families face when infants require urgent medical care. As a former Director of Emergency Services, Susan witnessed too many instances where infants were transported by helicopter or ambulance without their parents, leaving families desperate and separated at one of the most critical moments of their lives. This experience was the catalyst for her generous donation to the new Women and Children’s Hospital that will include the creation of a level II NICU in Belpre, part of Memorial Health Foundation’s Together Campaign.
“There were too many times I saw infants being flown in helicopters alone, while their families were left scrambling to find a way to be with them. That’s a situation no family should face,” Susan shared. “This new hospital will ensure that families can stay together during a child’s medical crisis, without the added burden of long-distance travel or financial strain.”
With over 30 years of experience in healthcare, including 15 years in the emergency room, Susan recognized a clear need for a local hospital that can provide specialized care for women and newborns. She is especially aware that the Mid-Ohio Valley currently lacks the resources to offer comprehensive Level II NICU services. In her view, families should not have to leave the community to receive the care that could and should be available close to home.
Susan’s decision to donate to the Women and Children’s Hospital is also deeply personal. Her late uncle, Dr. Billie M. Atkinson, served as Chief Medical Officer at Marietta Memorial Hospital in the early 1990s. He inspired Susan’s career in healthcare, and his legacy of service continues to influence her today.
“My uncle’s dedication to healthcare and our community was a guiding force in my life,” Susan said. “His example of compassionate care is something I strive to honor through my work and my donation to this hospital.”
In addition to her healthcare background, Susan’s commitment to her community is deeply rooted. She served on Belpre City Council before becoming Mayor in January 2024.
“Community, healthcare, and education are the pillars of our region’s success. Memorial Health System plays a vital role in our community’s well-being, and this new hospital will only strengthen that foundation,” she said.
Susan’s donation serves as a call to action for other community members. She views this as an opportunity for everyone to contribute to the lasting health and well-being of families in the area. Recognizing that many people have been affected by the need for women’s or NICU services—either personally or through loved ones—she believes the new hospital will provide critical support, ensuring that no family has to face such challenges alone.
As the new hospital begins to take shape, Susan’s vision of a hospital that supports families through critical moments of their lives is becoming a reality. Her donation is an investment in the future of the Mid-Ohio Valley, ensuring that women and families have access to the care they need, when they need it most.
