Katie's Family’s Journey Through Trauma and Healing at Memorial Health System
After a traumatic brain injury, Matthew Mosher’s recovery journey shows the power of expert care—and unwavering support from Memorial.

On December 2, 2024, what started as an ordinary day quickly turned into a life-altering emergency for the Mosher family. Katie Mosher’s husband, Matthew, suffered a severe fall down the stairs of their Athens, Ohio, home, resulting in a traumatic brain injury and a skull fracture at the base of his neck.
Katie immediately called for help, and Matthew was taken to the Athens Medical Campus Emergency Department. With his critical condition unfolding, the team decided to transfer Matthew. Given the choice between Memorial Health System (MHS) and a hospital in Columbus, Katie didn’t hesitate—she chose MHS. Both Katie and Matthew have been longtime patients of Memorial Health System, so sticking to MHS for Matthew’s care was an easy decision.
“They’re more than providers—they’re partners in our health,” Katie explained. “I have had great experiences with many providers in the past—we felt like we were receiving VIP treatment from the moment we arrived.”
As Matthew was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Marietta Memorial Hospital (MMH), Katie stepped into the role of decision-maker, navigating every detail of her husband’s care. ICU nurses not only provided medical support but also assisted with personal needs, including helping her find a nearby hotel at a reasonable rate. The day after arriving at MMH, Matthew entered a critical stage known as Cushing’s Triad, a potentially fatal sign of increased intracranial pressure.
In those scary moments, one nurse stood out from the rest—Angela, from the ICU team.
“Angela helped me stay calm when everything felt like it was falling apart,” Katie said.
Since his accident, Matthew’s journey to recovery has been remarkable. He has returned to work, resumed nearly all his normal activities, and, just six months after the fall, he is expected to be clear to drive again and will be considered fully recovered.
Throughout the ordeal, Katie emphasized the consistent, compassionate care they received.
“From Dr. Ghodsi to Nurse Angela, and the entire care team, they’ve all been incredible,” she said. As a local caterer in Athens, Katie is exploring meaningful ways to give back to the ICU team to show her gratitude.
The Mosher family is now looking forward to the future. Outdoor adventures await this active couple who first met while Matthew was a whitewater rafting instructor. “This experience has made us even more grateful for every moment together,” Katie shared.
When asked whether she would recommend Memorial Health System, Katie didn’t hesitate: “Absolutely. I talk about MHS all the time to friends, families, and clients. Their people skills are unmatched, and the level of care is beyond anything I’ve seen.”
