Earning Primary Stroke Center Certification From Accreditation Commission for Health Care

Monday, June 9th, 2025

Memorial Health System is proud to announce its recent recognition as a Primary Stroke Center by the Accreditation Commission for Health Care (ACHC), a significant milestone in the organization’s ongoing commitment to providing timely, high-quality stroke care.

This certification affirms that Memorial Health System meets high national standards for the diagnosis, treatment, and care of stroke patients. It reflects the organization’s dedication to clinical excellence, rapid response protocols, and continuous improvement—key factors proven to improve stroke outcomes.

Every type of stroke is considered a medical emergency, as swift medical attention is crucial to achieve the best quality of life possible post-stroke. This is why it is important to be aware of the signs and symptoms of a stroke as soon as possible.

Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death in Ohio and the sixth in West Virginia—and in our region, stroke rates are even higher than the national average. Memorial Health System’s mission is to ensure that every patient receives the best care possible for all their healthcare needs, but especially for life-altering health emergencies such as having a stroke.

“Memorial Health System’s Primary Stroke Center certification demonstrates sustained adherence to specific standards enhancing stroke care excellence for the improvement of the Mid-Ohio Valley made possible by our team of dedicated professionals,” says Neurologist, Neurohospitalist, and Memorial Health System’s Stroke Program Medical Director, Daniel E. O’Connell, MD, MPH.

The Primary Stroke Center certification is awarded to healthcare facilities that demonstrate the ability to deliver quick evaluation and advanced treatment for stroke patients.

Dr. O’Connell was recently featured in the health system’s Community Healthline magazine, where he helped raise awareness of stroke warning signs and emphasized the importance of quick intervention while also outlining the health system’s approach to stroke care.
