For minor injuries, apply pressure to any visibly bleeding wound, and elevate the area. Apply ice for up to 20 minutes several times daily, and if painful, take acetaminophen.


Self-care

See a doctor immediately if:

  • Persistent and excessive bleeding that doesn’t stop with constant pressure
  • Sudden, severe headache
  • New-onset constant headache
  • Moderate to severe injury
  • Persistent painful swelling that doesn’t improve with self-care

When to seek immediate medical care

Make an appointment to see a doctor if:

  • Slow to heal bruising
  • White area of the eye fills with blood
  • Focused pain and swelling with bruise
