For minor injuries, apply pressure to any visibly bleeding wound, and elevate the area. Apply ice for up to 20 minutes several times daily, and if painful, take acetaminophen.
Self-care
See a doctor immediately if:
- Persistent and excessive bleeding that doesn’t stop with constant pressure
- Sudden, severe headache
- New-onset constant headache
- Moderate to severe injury
- Persistent painful swelling that doesn’t improve with self-care
When to seek immediate medical care
Make an appointment to see a doctor if:
- Slow to heal bruising
- White area of the eye fills with blood
- Focused pain and swelling with bruise
