Thursday, April 25, 2013 - Memorial Health System to Open Free-Standing Emergency Department
The Memorial Health System announces today that it will begin construction this month on a new 24-hour emergency department (ED) in Belpre, OH. The facility will be located at the Belpre Medical Campus on Farson Street. The hospital expects to begin treating emergency cases at the new facility in the spring of 2014.

“Demand for emergency care in our region has grown each year,” says Scott Cantley, president and CEO of the Memorial Health System. “Marietta Memorial’s Emergency Department visits have grown 10 percent each year for the past several years. We are committed to expanding and investing in health resources throughout the community, developing patient-focused medical programs to reach people where they live and work. We know there is an access problem in the Parkersburg area. Expanding our high level of emergency care beyond the main hospital is part of our overall strategic approach. We’re continually finding ways to improve our patients’ access to the trusted experts and valued services they seek at the Memorial Health System.”

The new facility will be the first full-service ED built in the valley away from a hospital. The $25 million facility will provide hospital-level emergency services around the clock. It will be about 57,000 square feet of space, which includes endoscopy suites and is anticipated to serve up to 35,000 patients a year.

According to Dan Breece, D.O., medical director of the emergency department at Marietta Memorial Hospital and Belpre, “It’s anticipated that about 50 or more employees will work in the new emergency department. You can expect it to be staffed with the same emergency medicine experienced physicians and nurses as we have working at Marietta Memorial and Selby General Hospitals.”

The emergency department will have 20 patient exam rooms, imaging services, including CT, x‐ray, ultrasound and a full medical laboratory with the ability to draw and interpret results immediately. Triage protocols will be in place for stabilization and immediate transfer of patients to Marietta Memorial Hospital if any additional services are needed. An ambulance will be based at the new facility around the clock.

“Patients from Belpre and other communities in Washington and Wood Counties will benefit tremendously by having this service near where they live,” says Cantley. “The new 24-hour emergency facility will provide earlier treatment for emergency medical care, when seconds count.”

"Anyone who comes to the emergency department will be able to be treated no matter what their medical problem is," Breece says. "If a patient needs additional specialty services like cardiac or surgical care, that patient will be stabilized and transferred directly to the services they require at our main campus. An ambulance will be on site 24/7 to meet that need."

The Memorial Health System and county emergency medical services teams will create a plan to ensure that transported patients are taken to the most appropriate emergency service based on the complexity of their condition.

The new space is being designed by the Columbus-based Trinity Group and development completed by the PM Company.
